Islamophobes unfairly show the rude and cruel side of Muhammad only. But he also has a soft and graceful side, a smiling face, which should be revealed to the world too as matter of fairness. Even Muhammad’s favorite child-wife Aisha indirectly told in anger that Muhammad was like a tyrant and never laughed.

Narrated 'Aisha: I never saw the Prophet LAUGHING to an extent that one could see his palate, but he always used to smile only. (Sahih Al-Bukhari 3:73:114)

Narrated 'Aisha: (the wife of the Prophet), I never saw Allah's Apostle LAUGHING loudly enough to enable me to see his uvula, but he used to smile only….” (Sahih Al-Bukhari 6:60:353)

'A'isha, the wife of the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him), reported: I never saw Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) LAUGH to such an extent that I could see his uvula-whereas he used to smile only….” (Sahih Muslim 4:1963)

But there were occasions when he did laugh.

Islamic scriptures boast Muhammad as the Uswa Al-Hasna (i.e. exemplary character) and Insan Al-Kamil (i.e. the perfect human being). Naturally he need to maintain that status, and would not laugh on silly jokes. So, he smiled or laughed on serious jokes similar to the occasions narrated in the following hadith.

I had tied my prisoner's (a non-Muslim prisoner’s) thumbs together with my bowstring. The Messenger of Allah looked at him and LAUGHED so that his back teeth could be seen. Then he questioned me and I told him what had happened. ‘Well done!' he said, and prayed for me to be blessed. (Al-Tabari, Vol. 7, p. 150)

Beating of slaves by their masters used to delight Muhammad:

“…He (Abu Bakr) then began to beat him (his slave) while the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) was smiling and saying: Look at this man who is in the sacred state (putting on ihram), what is he doing? …He (Apostle of Allah) was SMILING (when he uttered these words). (Abu Dawud 10:1814)

“…..A horseman came and said: Apostle of Allah, I went before you and climbed a certain mountain where saw Hawazin (pagan Arab tribes lived around Taif near Mecca) all together with their women, cattle, and sheep, having gathered at Hunayn. The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) SMILED and said: That will be the booty of the Muslims tomorrow if Allah wills….” (Abu Dawud 14:2495)

“….Allah's Apostle sent Abu 'Ubaida bin AlJarrah to Bahrain to collect the Jizya tax. Allah's Apostle had concluded a peace treaty with the people of Bahrain and appointed Al 'Ala bin Al-Hadrami as their chief; Abu Ubaida arrived from Bahrain with the money. The Ansar heard of Abu 'Ubaida's arrival which coincided with the Fajr (morning) prayer led by Allah's Apostle. When the Prophet finished the prayer, they came to him. Allah's Apostle SMILED when he saw them and said, "I think you have heard of the arrival of Abu 'Ubaida and that he has brought something." They replied, "Yes, O Allah's Apostle!" He said, "Have the good news, and hope for what will please you…..” (Sahih Al-Bukhari 8:76:433)

'Adi b. Hatim reported: I came to Umar b. Khattab and he said to me: The first consignment of Sadaqa brought to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) which BRIGHTENED the face of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and the faces of his Companions was that of Tayyi. (Sahih Muslim 31:6131)

He began speaking to the Prophet again, stroking his beard. Mughira (a black slave), clad in mail, was standing next to him with his sword. Whenever Urwah extended his hand toward the Prophet's beard, Mughira struck his hand with the lower end of the scabbard and said, ‘Take your hand away from his beard before you lose it!' Urwah raised his head and asked, ‘Who is this?' They said, ‘Mughira.' Urwah said, ‘Rude man, I am trying to rectify your act of treachery.' During the Time of Ignorance [pre-Islam] Mughira had accompanied some men and killed them, taking their money. The Apostle just SMILED. (Al-Tabari 8:76; Ibn Ishaq, p. 502)

It has been narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. Mughaffal who said I found (looted) a bag containing fat on the day of the Battle (raid) of Khaibar. I caught hold of it and said: I will not give anything today from it to anybody. Then I turned round and saw that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) was SMILING (at my words). (Sahih Muslim 19:4377)

Muhammad had about a dozen wives in his harem. They were divided in to two rival groups: one group led by his beloved wife Aisha and the other led Umm Salama. Muhammad used to enjoy the rivalry and even looked for opportunities to instigate them, and then enjoyed their fight with smile and laugh. The following hadith narrates one such incident. Although a long narration, it helps us understand how Muhammad used to dish out justice among his wives as per the Quranic command: Do justice among your wives (Quran 4:3)

'Aisha, the wife of Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him), said: The wives of Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) sent Fatima, the daughter of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him), to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him). She sought permission to get in as he had been lying with me in my mantle. He gave her permission and she said: Allah's Messenger, verily, your wives have sent me to you in order to ask you to observe equity in case of the daughter of Abu Quhafa. She ('Aisha) said: I kept quiet. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said to her (Fatima): 0 daughter, don't you love whom I love? She said: Yes, (I do). Thereupon he said: I love this one. Fatima then stood up as she heard this from Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and went to the wives of Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) and informed them of what she had said to him and what Allah's messenger (may peace be upon him) had said to her. Thereupon they said to her: We think that you have been of no avail to us. You may again go to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and tell him that his wives seek equity in case of the daughter of Abu Quhafa. Fatima said: By Allah, I will never talk to him about this matter. 'A'isha (further) reported: The wives of Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) then sent Zainab b. jahsh, the wife of Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him), and she was one who was somewhat equal in rank with me in the eyes of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and I have never seen a woman more advanced in religious piety than Zainab, more God-conscious, more truthful, more alive to the ties of blood, more generous and having more. sense of self-sacrifice in practical life and having more charitable disposition and thus more close to God, the Exalted, than her. She, however, lost temper very soon but was soon calm. Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) permitted her to enter as she ('Aisha) was along with Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) in her mantle, in the same very state when Fatima had entered. She said: Allah's Messenger, your wives have sent me to you seeking equity in case of the daughter of Abu Quhafa. She then came to me and showed harshness to me and I was seeing the eyes of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) whether he would permit me. Zainab went on until I came to know that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) would not disapprove if I retorted. Then I exchanged hot words until I made her quiet. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) SMILED and said: She is the daughter of Abu Bakr. This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Zuhri with the same chain of transmitters, but with a slight variation of wording. (Sahih Muslim 31:5984)

In another similar incident, Muhammad – the best perfect and greatest man ever – instigated his child-wife Aisha against another wife Zainab, previously daughter-in-law:

Narrated Aisha: “…The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) came upon me while Zaynab, daughter of Jahsh, was with us. He began to do something with his hand. I signaled to him until I made him understand about her. So he stopped. Zaynab came on and began to abuse Aisha. She tried to prevent her but she did not stop. So he (the Prophet) said to Aisha: ABUSE HER (Zainab). So I (Aisha) abused her (Zainab) and dominated her. (Abu Dawud 41:4880)

Hearing the stories of sexual weakness of other men from the mouth of their wives used to delight Prophet Muhammad and made him smile:

'A'isha (Allah he pleased with her) reported: There came the wife of Rifa'a to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) and said: I was married to Rifa'a but he divorced me, making my divorce irrevocable. Afterwards I married Abd al-Rahman b. al-Zubair, but all he possesses is like the fringe of a garment (i. e. he is sexually weak). Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) SMILED, and said: Do you wish to return to Rifa'a. (You) cannot (do it) until you have tasted his sweetness and he ('Abd al-Rahman) has tasted your sweetness….” (Sahih Muslim 8:3354-3355, Sahih Al-Bukhari 7:72:684)

Some more hadiths on similar incident and Muhammad’s advice to affected women:

“…The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) replied: She is not lawful for the first (husband) until she tastes the honey of the other husband and he tastes her honey. (Abu Dawud 12:2302)

“…..The Prophet said (to her), "No (you cannot remarry your first husband) till you taste the second husband and he tastes you (i.e. till he consummates his marriage with you)." (Sahih Al-Bukhari 7:63:238)

“…Allah's Messenger (pbuh) said: No, until the second one has tasted her sweetness as the first one had tasted. (Sahih Muslim 8:3359)

Note that Muhammad was surrounded by so many of his wives, called ‘Ummul Momineen’ – the mothers of the believers, who could easily resolve such private bedroom issues of other women. But Muhammad didn’t like it that way. He had hear sex related stories himself from those women's mouth.

Muhammad was a person of contradictory and stupid ideas and beliefs. On the one hand, he Muhammad ordered the Muslim women to wear hijab to screen themselves from unrelated men. On the other hand, he the Muslim women to suckle the unrelated grown-up men with the belief that after ten sucklings those men will becomes the concerned women's sons. Interestingly, Muhammad smiled and laughed while ordering a woman do suckling to an adult man:

'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Sahla bint Suhail came to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) and said: Messenger of Allah, I see on the face of Abu Hudhaifa (signs of disgust) on entering of Salim (who is an ally) into (our house), whereupon Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said: Suckle him. She said: How can I suckle him as he is a grown-up man? Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) SMILED and said: I already know that he is a young man 'Amr has made this addition in his narration that he participated in the Battle of Badr and in the narration of Ibn 'Umar (the words are): Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) LAUGHED. (Sahih Muslim 8:3424)

“…..He (the Holy Prophet) exhorted people to give charity, but they showed some reluctance until (signs) of anger could be seen on his face. Then a person from the Ansar came with a purse containing silver. Then came another person and then other persons followed them in succession until signs of HAPPINESS could be seen on his (sacred) face……” (Sahih Muslim 34:6466)

Muhammad used to keep his urine in a bowl under his bed. One one occasion, Barakha, aka Umm Ayman, drank it in the darkness of night without realizing it was urine. When Muhammad was told about it the next day, he laughed at it said she was blessed by his urine and will never experience any sickness in future. Baraka herself narrated story:

Al Husay narrated, Umm Ayman (Barakah) said: One night the Prophet got up and urinated in the corner of the house into an earthenware vessel. During the night I got up, and being thirsty, I drank what was in the vessel, not noticing. When the Prophet got up in the morning, he said ‘O Umm Ayman, take that earthenware vessel and pour away its content.’ I said ‘By God, I drank what was in it.’ The Prophet LAUGHED until his molar teeth showed, then he said ‘After this you will never have a bellyache’. (Al-Tabari 39:199)

Prophet Muhammad was the perfect human being and mercy to mankind. This hadith says volume about his perfection, humane and humble personality.

There are many more occasions that made Muhammad laugh. But the above incidents of his smiling and laughing will be sufficient to get a picture of the graceful side of his personality.

Muhammad has crossed all the basic norms of moralities. He separated sons from fathers for his selfish motives. In a similar incident Ali killed his uncle Amr and returned to Muhammad with joy:

‘I summon you to Allah, to His Messenger, and to Islam.’ Amr replied, ‘I have no use for these.’ So Ali said, ‘Then I summon you to fight.’ Amr replied, ‘Why, son of my brother? By Allah, I do not want to kill you.’ Ali shouted, ‘But I, by Allah, want to kill you.’ Amr jumped from his horse and advanced toward Ali. The two fought until Ali killed Amr. He shouted, ‘Allahu Akbar! (Ishaq:455)

As he returned to the Apostle SMILING with joy [for having killed his uncle] Jumar asked him if he had stripped Amr of his armor. ‘No,’ Ali answered. ‘I saw his private parts and was ashamed.’ (Ishaq:456)
