The Dutch animal protection party, Party for the Animals, introduced a bill into the Dutch Parliament in June, which will ban halal slaughter, a cornerstone of Sharia law. This Islamic ritual involves slaughtering animals by slowly slitting their throats without pre-stunning, and then letting them slowly bleed to death. The bill will also ban kosher slaughter, which uses the same, extremely cruel, way of killing animals.

As this article on the Party for the Animals website points out, the Lower House of the Dutch Parliament has voted to back the bill, and it now has to clear the Upper House on December 13 to become law.
These articles point out that halal and kosher slaughter have been illegal in New Zealand, Switzerland, and Scandinavian and Baltic countries for decades, and that it is also illegal in Luxembourg.
In 2002, Germany's highest court overturned a lower court's 1995 ban on halal slaughter. This ruling not only ignored the extreme cruelty, which that type of slaughter involves, but also ignored the fact that it is a part of Sharia law, which the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in a February 13, 2003 judgement ruled to to be "incompatible with the fundamental principles of democracy", when it rejected an appeal by Turkey's Refah Party against its banning by Turkey's Constitutional Court for trying to introduce Sharia (see point 123).
This 2003 ECHR ruling would, of course, be a good basis for lawsuits against the British Government for legalising Sharia courts, and against the German Government for re-legalizing an aspect of Sharia, because the British and German Governments are legally required to abide by ECHR rulings. It would also be a good basis for lawsuits against organisations, like the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which start undemocratic efforts to overturn bans on Sharia, introduced by American states.
By legalising Sharia courts, re-legalising an aspect of Sharia, and trying to overturn bans on Sharia, the British and the German Governments, and American Islamic organisations, like CAIR, are effectively saying that the wishes of the British, German, and American publics and their political representatives today have less worth than the beliefs and behaviour of Muhammad, who lived in the Arab Desert 14 centuries ago -- given the Sharia Law is based on his book, "The Koran", and on his other words and deeds.
Sharia also violates the US Constitution, which separates religion from the state.
This American documentary about human cruelty to animals, "Earthlings", narrated by Hollywood actor Joaquin Phoenix, includes stomach-churning footage of entirely legal kosher slaughter in an American slaughterhouse. Britons are far more supportive of animal welfare causes than a country with a halal and kosher ban like Norway, which is still killing whales. So, British politicians ought to not only stop pandering to totalitarian Islamists by helping them to achieve their undemocratic Sharia law goal, but also ought to be following the example of Holland and other European countries by banning ritual slaughter. Doing that would send a powerful message to radical Islamists that all of their effort to introduce Sharia law in the West will never succeed and that Britons will never accept cruelty to animal and would, instead, also everything to improve animal welfare.
