Tragic Story of a Mexican American Woman, Fooled by Islam

Hello, I am a Mexican American women born and raised here in California.
At the age of sixteen. I met my husband and fell in love. We married 3 months after I turned seventeen. I became a Muslim and embraced my husband's culture.
I became pregnant one month after we got married and the abuse started almost immediately after that. At first it was small things like I was not allowed any contact with my family without his permission. I was not allowed to shower without him being home or open any windows or go outside until he got home from work.
He started just slapping me and pushing me but as the years went by, it got worse. He broke my arms, broke my nose twice and beat me so bad that I couldn't see out of my eyes for two weeks. One time he hit me in the ear with his fist and I now have permanent hearing loss. I have scars over all other my body but most of all on my heart and soul.
My son, witnessed to all the abuse, is also errantly scarred by what he witnessed as a young child. I thought I was doing the right thing by staying with my husband and giving my son a home with his mother and his father but the price my son and I had to pay was too high.
My husband made me believe that I wasn't trying hard enough to please him and wasn't being a good Muslim wife. He had no wants or needs. Our home was always clean, meals always cooked, and I took great care of my husband and my son but nothing was ever enough.
He always told me I should be happy that he wanted me, because no one else would; and he was doing me a favor by marrying me. Yet, every time I would try to leave, he would cry and promise that he would change. But it only got worse.
I finally left in February 2007 after he refused help for a drug habit he had picked up over the last couple of years of our marriage. He continued to stalk me and harass me until he tried to kidnap me and is now serving two years in prison.
I feel safe now that he is in prison. The only thing that worries me is that after every thing he has done to me, I still love him. I spent nearly half of my life with him and I think about him everyday. My son looks just like him and sometimes I look into his eyes and just cry.
I just remind myself everyday that I have to love myself more than I love my husband and never allow myself to go through the abuse again. I have never shared my story with anyone for fear of judgment against me. I was taught that a good Muslim wife never tells her family business to others. For so long, I believed that. I just needed to get it out. I hope there is someone else out there who understands what I went though.

I do not believe in islam anymore because it is false; there is an article at: http://aziztayyab.info together with many more articles/books that proved that to me. But I believe spousal abuse is more cultural than religious even though islam advocates women rights are less than men. My advice would be that this woman should abandon islam and as someone already mentioned to get involved with some good christian group that helps the spousal abuse victims as well perpetraters and convince her husband to do the same. If this does not work then get a divorce and not feel any guilt because, love or not, all relationships are not guarantied to work.

To Concerned: You make a good point. Also something that is important to point out, but seems to get overlooked all the time, is the fact that most, if not all, of the evil committed in the name of another religion, or idea, is often contradictory to that religion or idea. In other words if a crime was committed in the name of Christianity does that mean Christianity is evil or just the person who committed the crime? For an answer to this we must read the Bible. Jesus provided absolutly no justification for any crime against humanity...unlike Islam.

To all atheist on this comment string: I am interested to know how you as individuals adopt a set of moral/ethical values that you consider concrete and useful for mankind and how you justify them logically. I think that it is an important question because religious people simply accept certain values (even if they are twisted/evil as in islam) whereas non-religious people must resort to the use of logic/reasoning. I think that it is essential to have a universal method to decide if something is right or wrong or if certain ethical values should be followed or not. A method such as this is absolutely needed to avoid moral relativism (which can be used to allow depravity on the one hand or religious violence on the other). It is a philosophical question that I have addressed myself and I am just curious how others approach this same question. Please, I am not interested in hearing from religious people, only humanists/atheists.

Religion and morality/rationalism do meet. Because most religions belive that God is a loving, merciful and just GOD WHO WANTS WHAT IS BEST FOR HUMANITY. This is the same thing which ethicists and rationalist want. The need for religion and God is inbuilt into human beings. But how do you decide if a set of religious values/ethics/morals constitutes a benevolent set of values with respect to people and human civilization. There are christian charities that are designed to help people in situations like yours. Seek them out. Those people have only love. They do care and try to help if they can. Stated scientifically it is adopting a set of social values, morals, outlook which will enhance the survival and progress of humanity. That is what evolutionary progress is all about. We see that scientific knowledge in conjunction with humanisic principles have led to huge improvements in mortality and life spans. At the other end greed is pushing us to the brink of catastrophe. The ideal of humans voluntarily sacrificing for the good of society is also necessary for the survival of the human race. Each religion sets forth principles which can either enhance our chances of evolutionary progress or reduce it. Each religion also puts forward role models which embody the principles they espouse. Evolutinary progress finally comes down to a battle of principles and ideas. That is why repressive negative ideas as found in religions like islam should be confronted head on. Wars and conflict are actually battles between ideas. Sometimes forces representing regressive ideas win and sometime it is the other way round. But so far the ideas which nudge humanity forward in the evolutionary struggle have won. Could we lose the battle? It is possible that could happen. If war between the soviet union and the west had occured it may very well have happened. Once again humanity is at a crossroads . If we dont do anything about the destruction of the environment it could very well mean a huge setback in our evolutionary progress. Humanity has to pull together and work in unison. Regressive , negative ideas and the ensuing conflict make this harder.

People do a lot of things wether from Muslim Background or not. But let's look at Islam Proper and its great founder: 1. Did you know that Muhammad beheaded about 800 Quraiza tribe Jews in one day, enslaved and raped (with his sahaba) the women and stole their fortunes. This saddens me to read it. Truly, I am sorry for everything that happened to you by the hand of your former husband. However, he and his family were not following the true religion of Islam. There is no rule saying that a woman can't shower or open a window when her husband isn't home. That was something his family probably did that is actually cultural- nor religious. As a 14 year old girl I know Islam to be a religion of peace and tolerance. My mom and dad are married and she takes bath when he's not home. In the summer we open our windows all the time, withOUT asking my dad. Really I am sorry for all that happened to you, but I hope that you can see the truth. Islam is not about treating women as second class citizens.

I am not sure if the Article was about Islam or about the husband of the writer ?? Just because you said he was Muslim, and you became Muslim, You did not give any reason why to blame the religion itself ? if what you said about you marriage life was true,which I doubt, then it is that person whom you choose to marry is the bad one. You say that islam is a great religion. Have you seen the verses condning violence against women? Have you seen the verses cencouraging violence against non muslims to convert them to Islam. Please do that and then try saying islam is a great religion..
