- We’ve had some, ah, killings at Mumbai—despicable acts. What
say you, Tom… Frank… Maureen? If we call them terrorists our
enemies will bring up Washington and Jefferson, accuse us of using
a double standard, say Washington and Jefferson were engaged in
the same kind of activities. We can’t let that happen.
We could call them gangsters but that doesn’t fit. Gangsters wear
three-piece suits and are loaded down with jewelry. Even Robert
Mueller couldn’t tell a gangster from the average Wall Street broker
unless it was a Gangsta Rapper…Cutthroat is too crude and it sounds
like it’s out of
Jack Armstrong, the all American Boy…We can’t call them freedom
fighters or somebody at FOX will snicker and that loon at MSNBC,
that Olbermann, will jump all over Rupert Murdock. We want Olbermann
trashing Sarah Palin not Bill O’Reilly.
We’re running out of adjectives. How about something that rhymes with Mumbai…How about rascals or unmitigated scoundrels? No? We’d sound like The Beverly Hillbillies or worse yet, like Charles Dickens? Okay. So, how many were there? Ten? That’s not enough for a horde and too many for a Magnificent Seven. You know what I mean.
Well, come on, Tom…Maureen…Frank, think of something. If we call
them terrorists our Muslim readership will decline and we don’t want
that to happen.
Okay…gunmen. That’s not too bad. We’ll try it for a while and see
if it catches on.
The Times has always been an innovator.
Mumbai? Mumbai? Isn’t that a funny way to spell Bombay? Well,
sure, it would be if one was trying to spell Bombay but Bombay no
longer exists, can’t find it on any of the new maps, and the
dictionary say look under Mumbai. All that focusing on Pakistan has
caused America to ignore or forget India. Times have changed Bombay
might have been good enough for
Lord Mountbatten and Mohandus Gandhi but it didn’t fit the
aspirations of a new, modern, dynamic Capitalist India. The name was
changed to Mumbai in 1995 (That long ago!) to honor the
goddess Mumbai, the ancient protector of Maharashtra. Whether
Gandhi would have approved the change cannot be determined at this
late date.
The name change angered Muslims—not all of them, only those that revere the Prophet and the Qur’an. A new terrorist group, the Deccan Mujahideen, claimed responsibility for the Mumbai killings.
The world was aghast; Islam was aghast. The Times and BBC
searched for new adjectives, more indicative of the cowardliness of
the 21st Century than of the heroism of the Marne or Normandy.
Muslims from Afghanistan to Zanzibar condemned the slaughter.
“Anyone who slaughters people and screams ‘Allahu akbar’ is sick and
ignorant,” said Kazim al-Muqdadi, a professor at Baghdad University.
Sick and ignorant…slaughter…Mumbai…Bombay…9/11…Badr…killing
disbelievers… a fierce slaughter… a horrible murdering… it says that
somewhere…oh, yeah…in the scriptures…in the Muslim holy books.

Qur’an: 9:5 “Fight and kill the disbelievers wherever you find them, take them captive, harass them, lie in wait and ambush them using every stratagem of war.”
Qur’an: 33:60 “Truly, if the Hypocrites stir up sedition, if the agitators in the City do not desist, We shall urge you to go against them and set you over them. They will not be able to stay as your neighbors for any length of time. They shall have a curse on them. Wherever they are found, they shall be seized and slain without mercy—a fierce slaughter—murdered, a horrible murdering.”
If the agitators in the City do not desist…Bombay…Mumbai…they will not be able to stay as your neighbors… lie in wait…ambush them…
The BBC was no better than The New York Times in coming to grips
with the ‘horrible murdering.’ Two millions of Muslims reside in
England. Why give offense? None of them, as far as is known, has
ever thrown a single
British East India Company tea bag into the Thames.
The Labor Party’s Friends of India was distressed. A Friends
spokesperson accused BBC of “mealy mouthed posturing” and of
desperately trying “to avoid causing offense which ultimately causes
more offense to everyone.” They are terrorists and BBC should call
them terrorists.
BBC resented the accusation. “This is nothing to do with
political correctness,” said BBC. “We are not calling them freedom
fighters. We are calling them bombers and militants. The fact is
terrorist does not have a universal meaning. It translates as
freedom fighters in certain languages.”
A list of freedom fighters in ‘certain’ languages would include
John Wilkes Booth,
Count Vlad,
Horst Wessel,
Captain William Kidd, Osama bin Laden, Mohammed Atta and Sean
Penn. This raises an interesting question. If bin Laden and Atta are
freedom fighters in a ‘certain’ language what do they call their
victims? Terrorists? Little old ladies jumping from the top stories
of burning buildings and five-year-olds eviscerated on school buses
just don’t seem to fit the bill. And when was the last time a
‘freedom fighter’ faced down someone like
Audie Murphy
or Sergeant Alvin York
in mortal combat?
Back to Tabari for lesson number two: “Killing disbelievers is a small matter to us.”
Sheikh Youssef al-Ayeri is a Muslim blogger. “It’s all right for Muslims to set the infidel’s castles on fire, drown them with water,” he wrote for the Fallujah Forum, “and (to) take some of them as prisoners, whether young or old, because it is one of the ways to beat them.”
This caused a tremor of alarm to ripple through the Internet community but it was scarcely anything new. Sheikh al-Ayeri was paraphrasing some of the things he had read in the Qur’an.
Inayat Bunglawala, a spokesperson for the Muslim Council of Britain didn’t have the first or the last word on the Mumbai killings but he may have had the most significant if he had stated it properly. It was a shame, said Inayat that “a handful of terrorists like this bring the entire faith into disrepute.” It would have made more sense if he had said, “It is a shame that an entire faith can bring freedom fighting into disrepute.”
In the meantime, The New York Times and BBC continue to struggle with their consciences, with the soul of the 21st Century, with politically correct terminology. Plato and Socrates never had it so tough.
Gunmen? Billy Bonney and the Clantons would have called Tom and Maureen and Frank out into the street for comparing honest, down-to-earth gunmen to child molesting, disbeliever killing Muslim freedom fighters. End of story…
It appears there is no more truth in journalism than there is in advertising.

Though I understand that you have written this article in good faith, there are a few errors that I would like to point out. For example, Gandhi's full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, and not Mohundus as you have written. Second Mumbai is not the name of a Goddess. The name is Mumba Devi, and she is not the Goddess of Maharashtra. She is a local deity of the fisher folk inhabiting the 4 original islands of Mumbai (former Bombay). The name has more to do with honoring the spirit of the natives of Mumbai than with religion. As far as Muslims getting hurt with this change of name is concerned, I really don't understand the point. There are places in India called Islamabad (long live Islam), Aurangabad and several places which either glorify Islam or the former Muslim rulers in India. We Indians have retained these names even though we suffered by the hands of these very people. We dont hate Muslims, however if Muslims do have a problem with these name changes they are welcome to leave India and live in another country where they're free to have their hands and legs amputated at the slightest mistake. India gives its citizens all the rights to free thought and expression. These rights include the right to leave India. The Muslims are free to exercise this right if the have a problem with the native Kouffar culture.

I think crying and fretting over the Media responses is not going to help us in anyway. What we really need to do is to beat them at their own game. This might not be easy, nevertheless it not impossible either. Simple strategies will work wonders here. Since I live in India I will will only discuss India. There are so many time that the Media people discuss issues like terrorism and entertain phone calls and text messages. People like us can call these channels and mention our point of view along with the websites like FFI and Islam Watch. We can also write letters to editors of various magazines and dailies on a regular basis. We can put up our claims by simply being nice and polite in our Emails and keep witting frequently, eventually our letter will be posted in the letter to the editor columns. There is no need to spare your efforts, you can write to all sorts of magazines in all languages. This way we can reach a broad audience who can be educated on the evils of Islam.

At the root of western media reluctance to call Islamic killers "terrorists" is the belief that Islamic terrorists have some kind of legitimate historical and contemporary grievances eg Muslims are historical victims of "colonialism" and are being "oppressed" in such places as Palestine, Kashmir etc . The truth of the matter is that historically Muslims were arch imperialist-colonialists and, due to their inability to accept that non-Muslims have a right to exist on the earth as non-jizya-paying free peoples, are the prime cause of all trouble between themselves and non-Muslims. Muslim non-combatants in Kashmir would not be getting killed by stray indian army bullets if Muslim terrorists were not operating in that area with the aim of separating it from India and incorporating it into a united Islamic caliphate which they dream would conquer the world.

Muslim use the excuse of colonialism because it appeals to the left. Kashmir is a historical part of India and Islam is the foreign agent in that conflict. As for Palestine, 80% of Israelis today live on land bought from Arab landowners and those purchases were approved by the Ottoman Muslims. What else? The French occupation of Algeria? Let's not forget what started that. The Arab Muslims for centuries terrorized European shipping boats, stealing the cargo, enslaving the people onboard until they were ransomed, and demanding tribute to sail on waters near Islamic lands. Even Karl Marx as a journalist praised France for colonizing Algeria. Whatever the Sacred books preach is a different matter. Moreover due to "adulteration" of the Holy Books (by some monks) they are not to be considered as always right. People must do deeds which are right as per the preachings, duties, thoughts of HUMANITY. Is it anyways, logically, correct to kill a person just because he does not follow the book that you follow.If you feel that your GOD (Allah) is the creator of this world & the people, then why did He create these people (the Non Muslims) who (you feel) donot follow HIM.
