Jihad: The Third Decree of Islam
How to bring the entire world under the banner of Islam? How to convert each and every dar-ul-harb into a dar-ul-Islam? Here comes the third decree of Islam, namely “jihad”. English authors generally translate jihad as ‘holy war’.
In Hindu theolgy, the term, “dharma yuddha” or “righteous war” may represent some kind of equivalence for “jihad”. “Dharma yuddha” stands for a war waged by a civilized people against unjust aggressors or oppressors. The War at Kurukshetra in Mahabharata (~3000 BCE) is an example of “dharma yuddha”.
The War at Kurukshetra was fought between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, representing the forces of good and evil, respectively. Prior to the war, elderly Bhishma of the Pandava camp outlined a set of code-of-conducts, which the warriors had to follow. Verses 27–32 of the ‘Bhishma Parva’ narrate these laws, such as:

there will be no enmity after dusk when the battle is declared over,
-
one, who is engaged with oral combat, should be confronted orally,
-
a charioteer should fight with a charioteer, a horse-man with a horse-man, an elephant rider with an elephant rider and a foot-soldier with a foot-soldier alone,
-
one should fight with his counterpart who is equal in strength, skill, will, zeal and competency,
-
Before a combat starts, each warrior should make his opponent alert and warn about the consequences.
Those ordnances listed a set of people, who were not to be molested, injured or killed under any circumstances. A few of them are:

a soldier, who has casually gone out of the battle field,
-
a man, who is unprepared and incaution,
-
those, who has become overwhelmed or awestricken by observing the blood-shed,
-
those, who is engaged in fighting with another man,
-
those, who has already surrendered,
-
those, who is fleeing the battle-field showing his back,
-
those, whose sword has been broken and armour has been cut and so on.
In addition to that, no injury was to be inflicted to the driver of a chariot, carrier of weapons, drummers and conch-shell blowers etc. Noncombatants, like women, children and the elderly, never even enter the equation of Hindu warriors.
As concerns jihad, it is neither holy nor righteous; instead, it is the most barbaric incitement to commit indiscriminate and large-scale homicide. Jihad stands for the indiscriminate killing of kafirs, enslaving their women and children, raping the women and keeping as sex-slaves, plundering their wealth, confiscating properties, and occupying their land by sword, fire or whatever means possible. In fact, Islam was born with the sole intention of creating global empire. It, therefore, puts greatest virtue in its military component: jihad or fighting the kafirs with the intent of eliminating them from the face of the earth, eventually. Allah has proclaimed that whatever wealth and riches that exist on the earth belong to Allah and His Messenger and Islam inspires its followers to wage a war against the kafirs, the unlawful occupiers of those wealth and riches, for bringing them to Muslim hands, the legal owners. So, for a Muslim, launching a jihad or war against the kafirs, is the highest virtue—higher even than a pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj). So says the Koran:
Fighting against the kafirs is beyond one’s personal likings and dislikings as Allah has commanded to fight the pagans and all those who ascribe partners (shirk) with Allah (2:216).
A Muslim, participating in Jihad, is called a mujahid (pl. mujahidin). Allah’s ultimate intention is to raise and establish His religion to reign supreme over all people and places on the earth with the help of mujahidin. Allah aims to defeat the enemies of His creed, the infidels, with mujahidin’s help. So the Koran says:
“That you believe in Allah and His Messenger and that you strive hard and fight in the cause of Allah with your wealth and lives” (61:11).
“Jihad is better for you than your sitting back at home and if you do so, He will forgive you your sins, your foulest deeds and admit you into the gardens of eternity (paradise)” (61:12).
To inspire Muslims for jihad, Koran continues, “There is nothing in the sight of Allah which may be equated to jihad.” (9:19) and “No equal are those believers who sit at home (except those who are old and disabled) and those who strive hard and fight with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allah” (4:95). “That is because they (who sit back at home) suffer neither thirst, nor fatigue, nor hunger in the cause of Allah. …Nor they raise the anger of the disbelievers or inflict any injury (killing, robbing or taking captive) upon the enemy” (9:20). “Anyone whose feet get covered with dust in Allah’s cause will be forbidden from the hell-fire” (Bukhari: 4:66). Allah rebukes those who sit back at home for their cowardice and threatens them with cruel punishments as says the Koran, “If you march not forth (for jihad), I will punish you with painful torment and will replace you with other people” (9:39).
Allah loves military discipline and rank and rows (surat-us-saff) during jihad and says, “Verily, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in rows and ranks as if they were a solid mass” (61:4). Discipline comes only when every one serves allegiance to a single commander; hence, the Koran says: “Verily, those who are serving allegiance to you (O Mohammad), they are in fact serving allegiance to Allah” (48:10).
Allah promises divine assistance and guarantees victory for Muslims and says, “As a divine assistance, Allah will provide five thousand angles as fighters and victory for the Muslims” (3:124–125). “So don’t become weak and be not sad and you are superior if you are indeed believers. …Allah helps those who remain steadfast” (3:139–142). Allah also says, “Those who believe, fight in the cause of Allah and those who disbelieve, fight in the cause of Satan, ever feeble indeed is the plot of Satan” (4:76). “Oh you who believe; when you meet the enemy force, take a firm stand against them and mention the name of Allah both with the tongue and mind, so that you may be successful” (8:45). “If Allah helps you, none can overcome you and if He forsakes you, who is there after Him that can help you?” (3:160). Allah adds: “…a thousand believers will overpower two thousand non-believers” (8:66); and if they are properly inspired, “twenty believers will overpower two hundred and a hundred believers will overpower one thousand non-believers” (8:65).
On the other and, fleeing from the enemy during jihad is one of the gravest sins; Allah warns such believers with crushing punishment in saying, “O you believers, when you meet those who disbelieve in a battle field, never turn your back to them. And whosoever is found to do so would incur wrath of Allah. His abode will be the Hell, indeed an evil destination” (8:15–16).
Jihad offers Muslims a two-ways benefit; there is not way they can be a loser. Firstly, if they win a victory and remain alive, they will become the honorable ghazi and enjoy the booty earned in the jihad; secondly, if they die, they will become martyrs (shahid), whom Allah will reward with an instantaneous and direct landing in paradise, the dreamland of Muslims filled with celestial prostitutes and profuse enjoyments. Allah commanded to reserve one fifth of spoil as the ‘holy khums’ or ‘sacred booty’ for the Prophet during his lifetime and to divide the rest equally amongst the mujahidin. So He says, “Every soul should be paid in full what it (jihad) has earned. And no one shall be dealt unjustly” (3:161). Allah says, “Invade in the name of Allah and kill them who disbelieve in Allah. … Collect the booty and do good as Allah loves the good doers”. It may be mentioned here that, according to the Koran, kafir women and children are also war-booty. Allah permits Muslims to commit sexual assault on them (Koran 33:50); He commands them to massacre all the male kafir prisoners-of-war (8:71).
It has been said earlier that the martyrs will be Allah’s most exalted guests in paradise. He says in this regard: “Think not of those who are killed in the way of Allah as dead. Nay, they are alive with their Lord and they have provisions” (3:169). “Allah will bestow on a martyr a greater reward” (4:74). This martyrdom in jihad is so beneficial for Muslims that a mujahid will say: “I would love to be martyred in Allah’s cause and then get resurrected to be a martyr, and then resurrected to be martyred, and then get resurrected to be martyred” (Bukhari 4:54). Regarding the benefits of martyrdom, the Prophet said:
(1) the soul of the martyrs live in bodies of green birds dwelling in paradise and fly where they like,
(2) all their sins and foul deeds are forgiven,
(3) a martyr will be able to intercede with Allah on the day of Last Judgment for seventy of his relatives and friends,
(4) he will come secure on the day of Last Judgment from great terror,
(5) he will not feel the agony and the distress of death,
(6) he will not be horrified by the great gathering on the Day of Resurrection and he will feel pain of killing kafirs except that of a pinch.
It is needless to say that this doctrine of martyrdom has been inspiring hundreds of Palestinian, Arabian and Pakistani jihadis to explode themselves as suicide bombers, that this doctrine inspired the hijackers who crashed the airplanes on September 11 (2001). It has been stated earlier that Allah forbids Muslim women from entering paradise. The only means by which Muslim woman can enter Allah’s paradise is by becoming a martyr in jihad. For this reason, more and more Palestinian, Iranian, Iraqi women are offering themselves as suicide bombers.
It should be mentioned here that, during the early weak phase of Muhammad’s prophetic mission in Mecca, fighting was forbidden for Muslims. But after his migration (hijrat) to Medina, when the Muslim community had become secure and powerful, Allah at first gave them permission to fight and subsequently made fighting obligatory for every able Muslim (2:190,217, 22:39). So Allah said, “Hence when you meet them who disbelieve, smite them on their necks till when you have killed or wounded many of them” (47:4).
Allah says he is capable of punishing the nonbelievers whenever He likes, but He wants to punish them with the hands of the mujahidin in order to test their allegiance to Allah. So He says, “but, if had it not been Allah’s will, he certainly could have punished them. But to test you, some with others. But those who were killed in the way of Allah, He will never let their deeds to go waste” (47:4). So each and every Muslim should thank Allah for providing them with such a unique opportunity to express their allegiance to Him by killing non-Muslims; they should say, “Praise be to Allah, who has ordained ‘Al-jihad’ (to fight in Allah’s cause), with the heart, with the hand and with the tongue, with the reward of a place in the gardens of paradise”.
All Islamic scholars unanimously agree that jihad is the highest virtue in Islam—superior, to prayer, fasting and even pilgrimage to Mecca. It comprises all kinds of worships, both hidden and open, including one’s great love for Allah, one’s sincerity to Him and one’s trust in Him. In fact, jihad is a very wide gate: there is no deed equal to Jihad, whose reward and blessing is as great as Jihad’s. Therefore, it is the best thing a Muslim can volunteer for. Jihad shows one’s patience and devotion to Islam, to Allah; it is the best form of worship in Islam.
The reader should not miss the point that the ultimate aim of Islam is to turn the entire world into an empire of Islam, to turn the globe into an Arab imperial state, so that “Allah’s religion reigns supreme” (8:39). And jihad is Allah’s military instrument that must be applied by Muslims to achieve Allah’s ultimate goal. That is the reason why Allah repose the highest merit on it and incites Muslims to participate in jihad with the allurement of booty and sex with kafir women in this world, and, in the next, all sorts of sensual pleasures and comfort of paradise. So the Koran says, “Allah promises to such of you who believe and do good work (jihad), that He will cause them to succeed the nonbelievers in the earth. …He will establish for them their religion. …And will change their fear into security” (24:55). Allah adds, “My servants the righteous shall inherit the earth” (21:105) as “They are the best” (3:110).

Great essay. The contemporary weapons of jihad against the west are massive immigration of muslims and their tremendously high birth rates. Given enough time they will be a demographic majority in most countries of the west. They receive all the help from naive western helpers. The only hope is that many of them become so well-educated in the sciences and philosophies of the west that they become secularised and leave their so-called religion of peace.

A Muslim must believe in Divine Decree or destiny — qadar in Arabic. The concept of qadar used in the Qur’an means a measure or the latent possibilities with which Allah (God) created human beings and all things of nature. When Allah created each thing, He determined when it would come into existence and when it would cease to exist. He also determined its qualities and nature. And everything in the universe, the seen and the unseen, is completely subject to the overriding power of Allah. Nothing can happen outside His Will. As for human beings, they are not completely masters of their fates, nor are they puppets subject to the hazards of destiny. Allah gave humans limited power and great freedom, including the freedom of choice. That autonomy makes each individual accountable for his or her deeds. We cannot know our future and, to a large extent, we cannot control it. But we can make decisions within the limits of what we can control, based on our understanding of the way the world works. If someone chooses to punch his fist into a brick wall, he cannot claim any injustice when it hurts. He knows that the wall exists and that it is hard. That is the reality — the “laws of nature” — he has to deal with. Yet the ultimate reality is that Allah could make the wall disappear just before one’s fist reaches it. Just as Allah created nature and its laws, He made moral laws, and we cannot claim any injustice if we get punished for disobeying or ignoring those moral laws. Only sincere prayers can change the way events unfold The concept of qadar, therefore, indicates that we must seek harmony with Allah’s rules of human nature and nature at large, and consciously submit to His will. Destiny as conceived by Islam, therefore, does not take away our freedom of choice and action. It is our willful choice of those actions from our inherent possibilities that are in harmony with Allah’s will that earns us our reward from Allah. Yet, when Allah set certain rules in His decree as to how things evolve, even these things can be changed through prayers. The Prophet stressed that only sincere prayers can change the way events unfold, and that true worship and sincere submission to Allah can raise the believer above the normal ways of nature. Prayers can and do result in “personal miracles” — events or experiences that we consider almost impossible and certainly highly improbable. From an Islamic point of view, human beings are free for all practical purposes. A person has no excuse for making the wrong choice and then blaming qadar or destiny, any more than a man punching his fist into a wall can blame the laws of nature. He knew the consequences of his actions for all practical purposes and he shouldn’t expect a miracle! We should not worry about what Allah has written for us, since we can never know it. But our duty is to strive for the best in this world and the next. Then, good results will follow, if Allah wills. As for the question of whether humans are predestined to enter Paradise or Hell, we must remember that Allah transcends the limits of time. He is All-Knowing of the past, present and future. Thus He knows in advance which path — good or evil — each individual will choose and what will be his or her final destination — Paradise or Hell. But such knowledge does not mean that He makes each person choose a certain path.

I am new to this site but have had a chance to read many of the essays and works done by different individuals giving great effort to the dismantling of their ex-religion. I have also read a great deal of the comments. Needless to say there seems to be an awful amount of effort put into the research which I must say is quite impressive Dr.B. However there is also an overwhelming sentiment of disdain and recalcitrance as well as effort expended in rebuttals etc. However we seem to be missing something, lets call it an enlightened perspective, that points toward constructiveness and removes us from participation in the all consuming dialectic. So I will give some effort to perhaps humbly point to that direction for those who are willing to see. First we must recognize the nature of how most of us have been oriented. We are, all of us, currently living under the construct of a world in which the cultures, religions etc were predominantly sired by this "civilization" of barbarism. Its basic and most fundamental premise is the notion of the dialectic of "opposites", "us against them" and all its complex multifaceted manifestations. We must begin to look at how our educational, political, spiritual, social etc institutions have either originated from or have been influenced by this dynamic. If we can agree that these institutions are primarily a reflection of our collective orientation and visa-versa then we may also be able to surmise that anyone who can affect our orientation from the outset, affects the world, our perspective of it and consequently our view of one another, ourselves and the ultimate purpose of our existence. We cannot begin to extricate our selves from the systems so established, such as Islam, without looking at the entirety of the mindset from which all of the faith based religions have evolved. It is impossible to truthfully examine this mindset and its development outside of the context of real and actual unadulterated HISTORY. And so I ask, how does one introduce a religion as a guide to all humanity that doesn't accurately account for or address the, now overwhelmingly evident, origins of humanity far less the universe? This among other issues of logic is what plagues these religions which is why they depend explicitly on Faith and Belief. This is because they dare not attempt to vouch for the historicity of their claims in the face of the keepers of the Knowledge; those who have been here the longest and have been watching the "civilizationally young" ones attempt to destroy the world. The "modern" age/civilization is relatively young compared to those of the first humans who domesticated plants and animals, studied the stars and constructed unparalleled monuments and structures as they preserved and nurtured the blossoming world. It is these young ones who are responsible for our current dichotomous religious, political and social institutions which begot our "modern day" chaotic world, just as the self fulfilling prophecies in Islam and others predict. Let's give ourselves a chance by looking at some of the oldest cultures of the world, where ever they still remain somewhat intact, and see how they lived and why given their deep wisdom and knowledge. We will see that 'the word "modern" has nothing to do with anything that deserves to be taken seriously. It is a system from no past and towards no future. Its strength resides only in the fact that it exploits the enthusiasm and passions of the masses. And since it is easier to maintain a feeling of hate and phobia than a feeling of love and peace, this system chose the cheapest goal: create enemies', a wise man once said. Isn't that the world we live in and a major component of the religions some of us have found the courage to leave?! But we call them primitive! 'We have a tendency of thinking that people who are capable of building skyscrapers, cars, planes and rockets cannot be savage or barbaric, but this is untrue, absolutely untrue! What we build has no value other that the value we place upon it, as a bird admires its nest, as a bee marvels at the way it makes honey, as a plant glorifies the beauty of the aroma from its flowers, as a termite glorifies the ingeniousness behind the holes it makes in wood, etc. What we construct does not reflect our quality. It stays within the borders of our animalistic abilities.' So while we are exposing the truth about Islam, lets not forget to start looking for solutions too, lest we become stuck in a dialectic of us against them while the world continues falling to pieces around all "sides"... Let us Identify ourselves by what we are and Govern ourselves by what we are not... Peace and love, Ib-Ra-Hima

I would like to supplement the facts presented by Dr radheshyam.The rules of war followed by indians were based on vedas.The first law giver of the world sage manu (was also the first democratically elected king of the world) in its manusmriti had written the laws to be followed during war, he himself was the mantradrista rishi(samadhist yogi) and philosopher of vedas. Noted historians, writers and intellectuals have summed it up like this;Harold Horace Wilson (1786-1860) Eminent Orientalist, professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University author of Wilson's Works and The Visnu Purana: A System of Hindu Mythology and Tradition and co-author of History of British India says: "The Hindu laws of war are very chivalrous and humane, and prohibit the slaying of the unarmed, of women, of the old, and of the conquered." At the very time when a battle was going on, be says, the neighboring cultivators might be seen quietly pursuing their work, - " perhaps ploughing, gathering for crops, pruning the trees, or reaping the harvest." Chinese pilgrim to Nalanda University, Hiuen Tsiang affirms that although the there were enough of rivalries and wars in the 7th century A.D. the country at large was little injured by them.Faxian (4th century) a Chinese pilgrim to India, marveled a the peace, prosperity, and high culture of the Hindus. Having grown up in war-torn China, he was deeply impressed by a land whose leaders were more concerned with promoting commerce and religion than with slaughtering substantial portion of the population. When india was invaded by islamic invaders indians who were not accustomed to this type war were perplexed and puzzeled, where on the name of allah womens were raped, men killed, elders disrespected, temples looted and disrespected. In the words of German philosopherand writer Arthur Schopenhaeur, one of the greatest philosophers of the 19th century. He was the first Western philosopher to have access to translations of philosophical material from India, both Vedic and Buddhist, by which he was profoundly affected. Counted among his disciples are such thinkers as Nietzsche and Wittgenstein, as well as Sigmund Freud. Author of his magnum opus, The World as Will and Representation, in 1819, he narrates the sordid tale as follows: "...This of the fanaticism, the endless persecutions, the religious wars, that sanguinary frenzy of which the ancients had no conception! The destruction or disfigurement of the ancient temples and idols, a lamentable, mischievous and barbarous act still bears witness to the monotheistic fury...carried on from Mahmud, the Ghaznevid of cursed memory, down to Aurangzeb, the fratricide, whom the Portuguese...have zealously imitated by destruction of temples and the auto defe of the inquisition at Goa...We hear nothing of this kind in the case of the Hindoo...." Infact Karl marx has summed it up like this:-Karl Marx (1818-1883), the grandfather ideologue of Communists worldwide. In his article titled “Declaration of War— On the History of the Eastern Question” published in the New York Tribune of April 15, 1854, he observed that: "The Koran and the Mussulman legislation emanating from it reduce the geography and ethnography of the various people to the simple and convenient distinction of two nations and of two countries; those of the Faithful and of the Infidels. The Infidel is ‘harby’, i.e. the enemy. Islamism proscribes the nation of the Infidels, constituting a state of permanent hostility between the Mussulman and the unbeliever.
