As we know, the Islamic Khilafa ended with the collapse of the Ottoman empire in 1924. Not many Muslims at the time mourned the death of the khilafa, certainly nothing on the scale we see these days. The Turks were thrilled by the prospect of cultural freedom in the modern and secular Turkey that was already being established by Mustafa Kamal. Outside Turkey, the Arabs celebrated the victory of their revolt which brought about the downfall of a repulsive and ailing empire.

Impact of Guru Arjan Dev’s Martyrdom
The Hindus, Sikhs and other natives of India had to suffer a great deal of oppression and hatred from the Muslim rulers and the local Muslim population. Though the disciples of the Sikh gurus urged them to stand up against the Muslim tyranny and oppression and take revenge, the gurus rejected such proposals on the ground that it will not be proper for the saints to be vengeful. It is also mentioned that Emperor Akbar, an avowed apostate of Islam, was not hostile to the Sikhs and other non-Muslims, but the situation greatly deteriorated again after his death. Particularly the barbaric torture inflicted upon Guru Arjan Dev by Emperor Jahangir and his eventual martyrdom greatly altered the view of the Sikhs toward the Mughals. "They resolved not to submit meekly to their oppressions but to defend their rights by arms." [RCM BVB vii:307]

Guru Arjan Dev
Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Sikh Guru, was the youngest son of Guru Ram Das, born on 15 April 1563 in Goindval, Punjab. He was also the first Sikh Guru to be martyred by Muslim rulers.
Arjan Dev served as the Guru of Sikhism for a quarter of a century (1581 to 1606 AD). He constructed the Golden Temple, also called Harmandir Sahib or Darbar Sahib, at Amritsar, which is considered the holiest centre of Sikh pilgrimage. ‘Harmandir Sahib’ literally means ‘The Temple of God’.
